24 hour fitness

Posted by Jason Wu on June 30, 2008

They opened a new 24 hour fitness on Louisiana and Elgin.  It is a super sport.  To me all that means is they give you a towel.  I don’t use the pool and the basketball court is available at the sport on Chimney Rock.  This place is nice of course.  It was new, so all the equipment is nice and new.  The basketball court looks bigger than the one on Chimney Rock, more like the Voss location, but with real hard wood floor.

Parking might be an issue when the place gets crowded.  The location is prime and there is a parking garage.  However there are signs that say 24 hour fitness parking is on the third floor.  One floor of parking will not be enough during peak hours.

The whole thing is actually on the 3rd and 4th floor of the building.  The locker rooms, pool, and cardio are on the lower entrance floor.  The basketball, racquetball, and weight training stuff is all upstairs.  There seemed to be plenty of room.  It will be my preferred place to go since it is now the closest one to home.

If you don’t pay no tolls then we don’t get no rolls

One of the unique features of the new I-10/Katy Freeway will be the Katy Tollway – the first tolling facility in the nation to operate within the right of way of an interstate highway. The new Katy Tollway will replace the single contra-flow METRO-operated High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane, located today in the center of the I-10/Katy Freeway. The Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) will operate and maintain the Katy Tollway.

Rockets Draft Results

Posted by Jason Wu on June 27, 2008

Donté Greene of Syracuse – good size swing man

Joey Dorsey of Memphis – undersized, listed sometimes as shorter than Greene, but is a bruiser

second-round pick from the Grizzlies in 2009 – nice, since the Griz always suck

Maarty Leunen, a 6-9 forward from Oregon. They plan to have him play overseas next season.

We traded our pick of the French guy to get Donte Green, Joey Dorsey, and a future pick.  I think that’s not a bad deal.  However, Donte Greene has to develop.  Joey Dorsey is a monster like Ben Wallace, but we all know Ben Wallace sucks.  We already have Carl Landry so why get Joey Dorsey, another undersized PF.  I’m thinking we trade a PF.  I’m glad we did get so much in return for a single pick.  Our last pick is just a project I guess.  Leunen seems like a tougher version of Steve Novak.

I think we did okay in the draft.  We got value.  We weren’t high enough to get an impact player to affect the upcoming season.  I don’t think we’re done with the roster yet.  I see more moves coming up.

…and music is my aeroplane

Posted by Jason Wu on June 27, 2008

http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/25/shoulder-straps-on-airplanes/

recent United Airlines flight I was surprised to see that their new planes are equipped not just with lap belts, but shoulder restraints as well.

The article goes on to say that they aren’t needed because

1. planes rarely crash

2. airplane crash survival doesn’t really count on belts, its all die or all survive

3. lap belts work just as well since shoulder straps are for cars to keep you from the window/wheel

Depending on how comfortable they are, I wouldn’t mind having should straps.  I get a little uneasy because of turbulence.  This would keep me in my seat AND provide the false sense of safety I need.

As Tyler Durden would say…”The illusion of safety.”

Jowling

I hope I remember to try this.  Basically you relax your face and shake your head side to side as fast as possible and snap pictures with the flash and quick shutter speed.  You get some funny pictures.  It is kind of like real versions of what you get with the funny MacBook webcam shots.

weekend

Posted by Jason Wu on June 23, 2008

I went to Austin.  The pictures basically tell you what I did.  We played basketball a couple times.  We went to the lake which was ridiculously fun.  We ate at BJs and got the fresh baked cookie with ice cream on top (Pazookie or something like that).  We bid Daniel farewell as he goes to Seattle (though I’ll probably see him later this week).  We went out to 6th street two nights in a row and I managed not to drink but I did go to Best Wurst.  Big thanks to Peter for letting us crash at his place.

In other news, my class is almost done and gasp my final is next week.

99 cent menu

Posted by Jason Wu on June 20, 2008

I went to Wendy’s today and got a baked potato and some chili.  They cost me $1.29 each.

Am I going crazy or did this just happen?  I googled it and apparently Wendy’s started doing this in 2005.

because basketball is life

Posted by Jason Wu on June 17, 2008

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/Obama-s-NBA-Dream-Team-cabinet?urn=nba,88384

Funny article about Obama, his future presidency, and what NBA player would fill the cabinet.  The obvious one being Mutombo as the Sec. of Defense.

It’s no secret White House hopeful Barack Obama is an enthusiastic basketball fan. He plays pick-up ball religiously, says he’ll replace the White House bowling alley with a basketball court if he wins the presidency, and is considering adding former Knicks’ Hall of Famer Bill Bradley as his Democratic Vice President running mate.

Which got me thinking: what would Obama’s executive cabinet look like if he could only assemble it choosing current NBA players?

grade continued

Posted by Jason Wu on June 17, 2008

So I got an email that gives the GPAs for our class rankings. This implies that the student services office has all our grades in. Of course, when I check online, it hasn’t been reported yet. So…yeah, they need to update the system cause I know they have the grade now.
