I thought I heard somewhere that a full freezer is most efficient and an empty fridge is best.  I heard wrong.  Both should be full BUT…

You want to keep the freezer and fridge as full as possible because the air that enters is warm and fills the space inside with warmer air.  In most cases the energy spent to cool the solid items is less than the energy spent cooling and re-cooling the warm air over and over.  However, you should not fill it to the max capacity.  The cold air inside must be able to circulate.  If you restrict the circulation too much, the fridge will work harder to cool things and waste energy.  Just keep the walls clear so air circulates around your food properly.
